Celebrating Earth Day across MSQ
Last month, agencies across MSQ Group’s global offices celebrated Earth Day – a global celebration to gather support for environmental protection.
This year’s theme? ‘OUR POWER, OUR PLANET' - inviting everyone around the globe to unite behind renewable energy.
What we’re doing at MSQ
At MSQ Group, we’re currently refreshing and refining our Climate Transition Strategy. Once finalised, it will cover our operations, employees, and clients, as well as the wider advertising industry which we operate in.
Part of this process involves knowing exactly what our emissions are, and where they come from. Therefore, I’ve been working to calculate our emissions footprint (as well as recalculating our historical footprint so we can accurately track changes) using our new emissions management tool, Cozero.
A few things we know:
In total, 56% of our electricity use across our offices comes from renewable electricity tariffs. That is double what it was three years ago.
And our overall electricity consumption has decreased 13% in the past 2 years.
Beyond sharing the numbers, it’s also vital that our people understand what we’re up to and have tangible ways of getting involved. So we decided to use Earth Day as a key moment to do so.
Celebrating Earth Day
Lauren Foskett from MSQ/Sustain, myself and other members of MSQ’s Sustainability Team gave a whole company update on MSQ's sustainability strategy and plans for the year ahead.
But to create a bit more of excitement than just a slide deck about our strategy, our wonderful Climate Transition Council kicked into action to organise a few different events across our offices.
In London, our weekly Thursday drinks was taken over with planet friendly options such as Toast Ale, Sea Change Wine, DA-SH, and Dalston’s. We also shared sustainable cocktail recipes and ‘grow your own botanicals’ cards for people to take home and try.
The New York office ran a ‘lunch and learn’ about sustainability in everyday life, organised a community swap for preloved items, and kickstarted their office composting.
Our Bollington crew had a tasty plant-based lunch, whilst discussing all things sustainability.
Leeds was all about competition – hosting an Earth Day Bingo and a ‘recycle-off’, pitting the two office floors against each other!
One of our MSQ Group agencies, Smarts, dedicated their regular ‘Escape The Desk’ time to getting out in nature, discussing sustainability, and taking action.
And across all our offices, we provided wildflower seeds packets from True Harvest Seeds and Seedball for people to take home and plant. We can’t wait to see what people manage to grow!
So, What’s next?
Later this year we have a whole week of activities planned to continue these conversations, and get our teams excited about sustainability.
We’ll also be revealing our full Climate Transition Strategy and those all-important emissions numbers!
